Chapter 15

Finn’s party members, who had been in the room during the hearing, alongside Lady Greenwald, Rena, and some of Finn’s citizens, mobbed him when he stepped outside.

“You really showed that gnome!” Rena grinned at him when Brianne and the others had finished congratulating him. “This is good news for the guild, as well. For a while, at least, our enchanter will be the only one in town. Except, of course, for the weapons you forge and sell.”

“That won’t be all that many. I can only make one or two per day, and I won’t be in town all that much. So your enchanter should do just fine.”

“Saw some new faces at the guild this morning.” Rena changed the subject so abruptly it made Finn blink a few times. “They’re being tested and ranked this morning. One of them, a little fireball named Nellie, tried to bite one of my testers when she got aggravated. Something about not wanting to be a combat class.”

Finn laughed. “She’s going to be an alchemist. Got her heart set on it.”

“Well, that’s fine. But please warn her not to bite any of my people going forward. Maybe feed her a little better, or something.” She winked at him.

“Are you staying long enough to run a dungeon with us?” Brianne asked, a look in her eye that made Finn a little nervous.

“I am.” He looked from her to Amos, then back again. “Why do I feel like she’s got something planned?”

“The evolved dungeon.” Amos confirmed. “The guild has finished their survey, and rating, and will be opening it up again. Since we’re the ones who reported the evolution, we get to be the first to go back in.”

Finn’s heartrate increased. That dungeon had very nearly killed them all. Of course, they were a lower level then. But still… “Will we get a first clear bonus if we finish it?”

Rena shook her head. “That doesn’t happen with evolved dungeons, if they’ve been cleared before. Only newly discovered dungeons. Though, if you discover one that recently moved, and had been cleared before it moved, you still get the first clear bonus.”

Finn debated about whether to report his new dungeon to Rena, but held his tongue. He wanted it to himself for a while, so that his people could run through it. Also, he didn’t need a bunch of adventurers poking around so close to the settlement. He felt a twinge of guilt, but figured he could tell her about it when he and his people were prepared to leave. Unless the dwarves wanted it for themselves.

“So what is the dungeon ranked now?”

“Silver. Mid-silver to be specific. The investigation team went in four times over a two-week period, and found the same monsters your group described. It seems to have stabilized, for now. Since we don’t have many silver-ranked adventurers here, I thought I’d give you guys the quest to confirm it. I’ll be sending a team with a clear quest once a week for the next year or so, to confirm that it hasn’t evolved further, or report any changes they find.
